Each year the UK Area Health Education Center recognizes a medical provider that is identified via student evaluations as an outstanding preceptor for their dedication to the voluntary faculty program.  Voluntary Faculty not only provide a clinical experience for our students, they also serve as a connection between the University of Kentucky and their community.  For nearly 30 years our voluntary faculty have been an integral part of our medical students’ education.  For example, during the previous year, voluntary faculty provided over 170 off campus rotations totaling over 600 weeks of clinical education. 2016 Summer Camp Recap

This past summer, the University of Kentucky Area Health Education Center (AHEC) sponsored the four-week Summer Enrichment Program Camp for rising high school juniors and the two-week Health Researchers Youth Academy camp for rising high school seniors. After a rigorous application process that included student transcripts, letters of recommendation, a personal statement and a list of their school activities, 60 students were selected for the camps.  Those selected represented counties and cities big and small throughout the state.  The students were selected by a group of individuals representing members from the AHEC regional centers throughout the state... Appalachian Health and Well-Being Forum Focuses on Southeastern Kentucky

As Southeastern Kentucky works to address well-documented and long-standing regional disparities in health and well-being, scientists from the University of Kentucky and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) came together with community leaders and research partners recently for the Appalachian Health and Well-Being Forum, which highlighted innovative health promotion and disease prevention programs and activities in the region. From AHEC Health Career Campers to Wildcats

Established in 2005, the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Pipeline Program works to further the interest of students in health professions. One of the goals of AHEC is to increase the number of health care providers in the Commonwealth. A popular manifestations of this program is the Summer Health Careers Camps. Open to Kentuckians, who are juniors or seniors in high school, camps allow students to interact with professionals from a variety of medical fields. The Community Faculty Program at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine hosted its 22nd Annual Community Faculty Conference for community faculty, campus faculty colleagues, administration, professional staff and regional Area Health Education Center (AHEC) staff April 8-9. But some people may be surprised by the distance some community faculty travel for the conference and the chance to meet their UK colleagues in person. The University of Kentucky Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is now accepting applications for its 2016 Summer Health Career programs for high school-age students aspiring to enter the health profession. AHEC will host a four-week Summer Enrichment Program on the University of Kentucky campus from June 19 to July 15, 2016. Students accepted into the Summer Enrichment Program will observe and learn from UK faculty members, health professionals and health profession students. Marin Appointed to Board of Directors at Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky

Carlos Marin, assistant dean for community and cultural engagement at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, has been appointed to serve on the board of directors for the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky. The 15-member Board’s role is to uphold the Foundation’s mission of addressing the unmet health care needs of Kentuckians and provide financial and programmatic oversight. AHEC Campers Try Out Careers in Medicine, Research at UK

Positioned beside a large poster and wearing a short white lab coat, high school student Julie Volpeheim rationalized findings from a study on Kawasaki’s Disease in the UK College of Pharmacy Atrium. Volpeheim, who spent the past two weeks immersed in scholarly research at the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Heath Researchers Youth Academy, employed the terminology of a doctoral-level student to describe the study’s methodology and results. AHEC Conference Strengthens Partnerships with Community Faculty

The number of community health care professionals teaching University of Kentucky students and conducting field research continues to grow every year. On Oct. 2, 2014, Southern KY AHEC hosted its first preceptor development workshop.  Providers from the Tri-County area were invited to London to attend Efficient Precepting:  Time Management and Medical Records Documentation for Community Teaching Physicians to help answer questions like: How can I find time to teach in an already busy day? How can I better integrate teaching into my practice? Which aspects of the patient medical record are students allowed to document?
